In order to do the 3d color wheel, I did a little math first and cut out all the material (color aids and paper board and sticks) I need before I put them together.

Then I stated to put them together

This is the finished piece

For Painted Color Chart I first cut out the color aids.

I experimented different kinds of combinations to make sure the color matched the color aids.

this is the finished piece with two ratio chart(the upper one is the successful one, and the lower is the failed)

Complementary Mixing Exercises

painting is always an interesting subject, this time I tried two kinds of way to paint.

Adding grey to the red orange, and adding blue green to the red orange.

I painted several times over the old paint, trying to get the color I want.

I painted several times over the old paint, trying to get the color I want.

and it the end this is the result I got.

Color Schemes

The first one is a poster I collect in past years, it used Red warm, red orange, and orange to contract with blue, blue green, and use black as the background color to stabilize the contrast.

Second is the album cover of Ivoryline, which use red warm, red, orange to contract with blue, blue green and green for a strong image impact.

The background used very light orange to smooth visual impact.

Next is and typography design on the magazine, it used light orange and light blue to highlight the note, and use orange and dark orange to push the contrast further more.

Last is a book cover, which use orange and red orange as the dominant color, and put in blue and blue green to single out the illustration.

DId my color wheel chart in the old fashion way (but i love it!)

then is the analogous scheme

The Color Theorist I chose is Michael Albert-Vanel, and it took the most amount of time during the whole process, because the circles are really small, but I really love the result.

Environmental Analysis is the easiest part I think, since I got lucky because my color is a food color, so I went to the supermarket first.

then I took several picture from the meetings that I was invited to last week.

First is a Chinese restaurant in east village.

then a birthday dinner in K town

Last week I went to the NYC Botanical Garden tried to find the color in nature to feet the color wheel.

It took me all the afternoon, and here is the result!

There too many other picture, so I put them on my FB, so if anyone is interested, below is the link.

Then I moved to work on Monochromatic Charts.

The 1 inch square one was done quickly, and for the free form one I draw the movement line first to make sure where I was going.

Then I started to cut out circles and paste them on the paper.

The Guerra Paint & Pigment Corp.

I took my second color workshop class in the The Guerra Paint & Pigment store which was very cool!

Here is the pictures I took in the store.

My Profile

My name is Casper Yang a.k.a Shang-Lun Yang. Wish to learn something else than English Literature, I prepared two years and got into Pratt Institute. Since my previous majored has nothing to do with design, I wish to expend my fundamental skills and aesthetic senses. So color workshop became my first step to the cornerstone of design. I wish to learn how to work with color, because there are so many choices out there, and the combinations are endless. I also wish to know what kind of effect colors can bring toward people. With a sharpen instinct toward color combinations through the workshop, it is easier to let clients understand the reason behind design.

Color Theory 101: Color Aids

Went to Pearl Point on Canal Street by myself this week, spent quite some times (it was a maze) and a fortune in there.

then started to work on the color aids first. This was me trying to organize the color.

then after 3 hours later, I got it done and clipped them for division. (looks nice)

then I started to work on the value matching!

after the full range and 10 steps of grayscale value were done, I started the painting. (The last time I used a brush to draw was about 1o years ago!)

I made quite a mess…

it really took me quite some time to paint this, but I thought it was pretty worthy. 🙂

here were all the grayscale studies I made this week!

and the final piece was the value matching!

9/9

I modified value matching chart a bit (get rid of the warm grey) and scanned it
